Behind The Scenes Photoshoot Videos

As part of my final hand in I will be making a video of behind the scenes of my photoshoot day. This is something that is done quite often recently as many companies now have YouTube channels. Part of my reason for doing this is because I have my own YouTube Channel which I have yet to incorporate into my university work and makeup artist profile and I'm very keen too as I have a good following (13,500 subscribers) .

These are some examples of behind the scenes videos on youtube done for fashion/editorial photoshoots.

Micheal David Adams (2012) fashion shoot for harpers bazaar - behind the scenes - with Micheal David Adams. [online] Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRM9CA8WbcY [accessed 1st may 2015]

I liked the cuts between the shots in this video as it was well edited and fitted with the background music and often the camera flashes. It also cut between the photos and the makeup and styling which kept it interesting.
Joan Allen (2012) fashion photo shoot: behind the scenes with photographer joan allen. [online] Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yge5TJH7XFA [accessed 1st May 2015]

I liked the style of this photoshoot a lot as it's very feminine and slightly ethereal. I also enjoyed how in this shoot there was a background voice of the director explaining what she liked from the shoot and the photographs then matched what she was saying.

JodyLynnPhotography (2013) behind the scenes look, high fashion photo shoot. [online] Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUUQ1lYxvAQ [accessed 1st may 2015]

I enjoyed how much makeup and hair was shown in this video as this is closer to the style of what I will be producing as I'm making it from the main perspective of a makeup artist. I also liked the candid funny shots of the people on set messing around and this is something I'd like to include in my own video.

Julia Kuzmenko McKim (2012) enchanted forest photo shoot BTS - behind the scenes - fashion - editorial [online] available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfkLa_Vq3Kk [accessed 1st May 2015]

I liked the style of this photoshoot a lot as it felt similar to what I will be producing because of the fantasy and woods elements. I also enjoyed how the cuts were put to the beat of the music as it made the video very cohesive, along with the different styles of editing (black and white, mirror images etc.) it made the video much more artistic altogether.

The elements from these videos I would like to reproduce are:

- short section of time lapse filming for the makeup and hair
- slow motion sections for some shots
- candid shots of models, me and photographer
- tiny bits of voice over from original video
- cuts to background music
- different styles of editing (black and white, sepia etc.)
- cuts of finished edited photos after filming of behind the scenes
- shots from behind photographers camera
- close up focus shots of makeup + outdoor nature
- change to styling clothes

I think this piece will support my project well as it will add another element to the finished photos and will link together my YouTube channel with my work as a makeup artist. To promote it I will share it on all my social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) and because of this and based on my previews videos I expect the video to get between 1000-2000 views.

Budgeting

For this project I need to think about budgeting as there are lots of things I need to buy. As I'm paying for the project myself my budget is a lot smaller than the budget would be if it was really for a fashion editorial photoshoot.

Hair

I spent £32.39 on hair for the project. I needed the hair to be very long and be able to withstand some heat as they would be styled. If I had a much bigger budget I would have bought all or some of the hair as human hair as it then could be styled with water and heat. However as this wasn't possible I instead bought kanekalon synthetic hair which is able to withstand some heat. This means they will cope with being put in heated rollers etc. It also means it can be brushed a lot and stays looking smooth and untangled.

I also spent £1.57 on feathers for the hair of the Beauty makeup

Makeup

I spent £23.80 on extra makeup items such as glitters and false eyelashes. I had most other things I needed for the makeup as it is a fashion/editorial shoot, including the silicones and cap plastic needed for the prosthetic. If this was really for a fashion/editorial shoot the makeup budget would cover the costs of the items I was using out of my kits.

Costume

I spent £33.90 on costumes as this was something that was necessary for the context if the shoot. I tried to keep it simple but if this was a real shoot for a magazine a lot more money would be spent on the clothes ans accessories and the photos are made to advertise them.

This means in total I spent £91.66 on extras for the project. I am happy with this number as I was trying to keep the costs down a lot. I know that for a real magazine photoshoot the budget would be a lot bigger than this and that means the quality of the final result would be a lot higher.

No budget will be spent on models and photographer as they are all voluntary. I will also be doing all the doing myself so no budget will be spent on this either.
