Rapunzel
This is the initial hair and makeup design for my Rapunzel character. It is based off the Grimm's version of the story where Rapunzel is banished from the tower after falling pregnant and lives in the woods for a few years on her own. I wanted the hair to still be long and have the classic plait that is thought of with Rapunzel but I wanted a lot wilder and more complex version of it. Therefore I will be adding a chignon and weft/s to add more length, volume and different colours to the models hair. I will also be adding complex plait work into the hair including side cornrows, fishtail, dutch braids and many smaller plaits all in a large wild looking backcombed style to give the look of someone living wild for a long time. The makeup is based on trends in fashion editorial print with the thick eyebrows, the coloured contour being taken from the eyes down the face and onto the chest and the strong eyeliner. The tears come from the original Grimm tale where Rapunzel has tears which heal the Princes blindness therefore I will be making small flat piece prosthetics that I will colour blue and gold and stick on the face.
Cinderella
These are my initial makeup designs for my Cinerella character. It is based off the Grimm's version of the tale which is similar to the original but has a magical tree rather than a fairy godmother and is slightly more dark in that the wicked stepsisters cut off parts of their feet to try to fit into the lost slipper. However, many of the Grimm tales have times when princesses lose their voice or their voice is cursed away in punishment (eg. 12 brothers). I wanted to include this idea into this character as Cinderella doesn't have much of a voice in the Grimm's tale. Therefore I will be making a prosthetic that completely covers the mouth whilst leaving the rest of the makeup very beautiful. I chose a green theme for this makeup and again followed trends in fashion/editorial makeup with the eyes, jewels and bronzed skin. The hair is based of styles from the period when Grimm's was originally released (1802) and will be an exaggeration of original period styles and may therefore need padding, or chignons again (the hair may change as more research is done into period styles) and the hair is adorned with leaves etc. to fit in with the green theme and relate to the magical tree in the tale.
Belle
These are my initial designs for the main character from the story The Singing, Springing Lark, Grimm's version of Beauty and the Beast. The story is quite different from the original and is a lot longer including a seven year journey following the beast who has turned into a dove and drops and feather and a drop of blood so Belle can follow him. I wanted the look to be very wild, based off the seven year journey part of the tale therefore the hair is very large, including crimping, small curls, backcombing etc. and has a large plait at the front of the head and smaller plaits running throughout it. The hair will also be adorned with feathers, based off the story. Again the hair may need wefts and chignons to make it look very exaggerated. The makeup is based of trends in fashion editorial makeup and has a blue theme to the look. The face is then splattered in blood to add a darker element to the makeup and based off the drops of blood in the tale.
Snow White
This is my initial design for the snow white character, based of the original tale by the Grimm brothers which is very similar to the original tale. The hair is based of the classic look of Snow Whites hair, with very neat, almost large finger waves that have been messed up a lot to give a slightly wilder look. The makeup is based of trends such as exaggerated eyeliner in fashion/editorial makeup whilst keeping the very important parts of the story like the white skin and red lips. The lips would take the blood red description further and be coloured with fake blood, that would then be taken down the face slightly to add to the darker elements of the story.
After my design tutorial with Pete, because of the more comlex hair work and small prosthetics in my designs it has been decided I need three makeups. Therefore I will be using the Rapunzel, Cinderella and Belle designs as they have more complex elements and more closely follow one theme which is important for a set of shots for fashion/editorial.
