Creative Writing

We had a creative writing class to help us develop our character and script breakdown. After a beginning exercise we played a version of consequences to get a list of character descriptions:

- Brown eyes

- Iridescent Lilac Skin

- Red Afro

- Lip Ring

- Fish Net Tights

- Wooden Staff.

This then became our character for the day. We then analysed a poem to see how description can be used in that context:

We then had to write our own poem/prose with our characters description in:

Brown eyes, their purple shadows that lay underneath blending gradually into the lilac skin which dazzles in the morning light
The blood red hair, curls slightly matted on one side, a burning mass starkly contrasting the skin so pale
My mouth opens as my eyes gaze deeper into the glass, the lip ring, so long embedded in my skin, glints gently as the light passes through a cloud
As I turn to pick up my gnarled staff leaning on the wall behind me I catch a glimpse of a new hole that's opened up in the side of my fish net tights
My mind wanders back to the previous night...

Next we each had to write a place and a circumstance/event on a post it note then give this to one of the other members of our group. We then had to write something including these two things, building our character up:

Felicity could hear her mothers shouts echoing through the green fields as she strode away from her house, angrily stabbing her staff into the still sodden ground. Her mind seethed as she thought over this mornings torrent. of abuse that had poured from her mothers mouth.
'when will you grow up and start taking care of this family - stop being a silly child'
'when will you stop dressing like some sort of delinquent, you'll get what your asking for with that outfit'
'stop daydreaming about that stupid job and those stupid people, you don't have the brains or talent to make it outside of this house'
Felicity stopped suddenly and blew air out of her mouth, looking up at the dark grey sky and counting to ten.
'do not cry. no time for tears. not helpful' she told herself before striding off towards the woods again.

We then had to write down a mind map of issues that relate to us and who we are:

Then we had to chose two of these issues and link them to our character and how that builds up their personality and appearance:

Based on this we then had to design our character:

I imagined my character as a 17 year old girl, with an Irish look with pale, freckled skin and very curly red hair. She has a kind of androgynous look as she doesn't know who she is yet so has untamed eyebrows and very messy hair, smudged eyeliner underneath her eyes and a lip ring.  We then had to do a makeup for this character:

I couldn't recreate the hair I had imagined with the resources we had that day so I just left my models hair very messy. I added freckles with an eyeliner pencil and then used the same pencil to make the eyebrows thicker and messier. I smudged a gel eyeliner underneath the eyes and put a little mascara on, purposely smudging some onto the eyelids. I then drew in a lip ring with the gel eyeliner.

I was happy with the work I did on this day, the creative writing class helped me develop ideas on characters and how makeup relates to their personality and background and we should look past just the aesthetics of it. My makeup was simple but it was interesting to see the process from the first game of consequences to the finished product which wasn't just a makeup but a whole character with background behind the makeup.
