Fashion/Editorial Makeup Artists

Alex Box

Alex Box studied as an instillation artist before choosing to train as a makeup artist. Her main focus in her work is the relationship between bodies and the environment. As a makeup artist she went on to further explore this relationship, fusing art, science, nature and the magical for many famous designers, for example Alexander McQueen. Alex is known for pushing the boundaries between technology, art and commerce with both visionary digital collaborations and as the creative director and co-founder of the cosmetics line Illamasqua, shaping and creating the brand's image and products from conception.

As can be seen from these examples of her work, her makeup is fashion/editorial but fuses makeup, body-painting, hair work, and sometimes small prosthetic pieces. Her makeup is the focus of each look and is made to represent or advertise different things. Her looks are extremely exaggerated and colourful, often fusing art with her makeup. These looks appear everywhere from fashion magazines, to Illamasqua campaigns to collaborative work with photographers such as Rankin.

Andrew Gallimore

Gallimore began studying Interactive Arts at Manchester before realising he wanted to swap a canvas for a face. He began working as an assistant for Sharon Dowsett and his career took off from there. He became the first UK makeup artist to get a contract as a Dior Makeup Ambassador. Over his years as a makeup artist he's worked in editorials for Elle, Harper's, V and worked with photographers such as David Bailey and Rankin.

All the above images show that Gallimore's work is deeply rooted in the fashion side of makeup, with many techniques and looks that are seen in high fashion. However they are all well thought out and intelligent, some playing on societies bigger issues such as the doll look and whether this makes girls 'airheads'. Most looks are very colourful and exact, having small precise detail that makes it stand out from other makeup artists.

Val Garland

Val Garland moved from Bristol to Sydney, Australia where she trained as a hair colourist. It was interest in colour hat lead her from a hair career to makeup. Val's looks feature a lot of juxtaposition between harsh and soft, often with light pale pastel coloured makeup overlayed with harsh black lines that are very neat. Her hair is also incorporated into all the looks, becoming part of the overall makeup piece. A lot of the looks also have a period influence, whether that be 1600's or 1980's. She uses a lot of bright, bold colours and a lot of extras like eyelashes and glitters.
