Logistics

Apart from the makeup there are many things to sort of for this project as it needs to reflect what we want to do when we leave university. My piece is a fashion/editorial photoshoot that I imagine going in an fashion/indie magazine. As a lot of Grimm's fairytales are set in the woods and a lot of the parts of the story I'm taking inspiration from are the parts where the princesses have be wondering around the woods for years I wanted an outdoor photoshoot to reflect this and add a darker element to my looks. I new I also needed a more professional photographer to make my photos look within the context of a magazine and as it is a fashion piece I would need costumes to reflect this.

Location

As my pieces include things I want to apply and do within the resources of the makeup studios at the university my first option was to find a location near to university so I would not need to apply things on location and it's easier for all models and photographer. I wanted a wooded area that had points of interest (eg fallen trees) so went on a location scout to the closest wooded area to the university - Slades farm.

It being a six minete walk from the university means that all the models and photogropher will be able to walk there with there prosthetic/hair pieces on with only touch ups then needed at the location. Once there I photographed the places that would work well for the photoshoot so that I can show them to my photogrpaher for reference.

The woods were perfect for what I wanted for my photoshhot as they had lots of trees but weren't too dense and had lots of points of interest such as fallen trees, small dips and hills etc. Going at 5pm also let me see the lighting at this time and helped me know I wanted the photoshoot to take place in mid to late afternoon as the sun will be lower creating more interesting lighting that would be more flattering than from straight above.

Photographer

Over the last month I had been the makeup artist on two of Danielle Johnson's photoshoots who is a second year photographer at AUB. Seeing her work first hand means I knew she could do the type of photos I wanted for my look. I asked her to be the photographer on the shoot day I had chosen - Wednesday the 6th May (day that fitted in with all 3 models, photographer and my own schedule)

On the 20/4 Danielle had to drop out of being my photographer due to prior family commitments. We discussed changing the day of the shoot however we couldn't find a day that would work for all the models, me and Danielle.

I then asked another photography student who I'd helped on a shoot previously and they confirmed they could do May 6th.

It was discussed then that location lighting would be hired out for the project as this would make the photos look more professional and finished.

Costumes

As this was a fashion/editorial shoot it needs to be shot in mind that it would be advertising some clothes/a clothing brand. I don't have a lot of budget for this project so I decided the best option would be to buy one piece in 3 different colours/styles that all the models can wear and the photoshoot would be to advertise that piece in a very interesting way. The piece needed to be something that fit in with the genre of fairytales as in industry the clothes would be decided upon then the makeup would be decided around the context of the clothes. As something that would be easy for all models to wear I chose to buy floaty skirts in 3 colours that match the theme of each makeup.

As I wanted all the models to be wearing very neutral, matching tops I decided it would be best to buy them too. Due to the fact the hair would be a very big feature in all the looks I wanted strapless tops so the straps didn't distract from the look. I went for plain white so that it also wouldn't distract from the skirts which would be the main feature.

I then tried the outfit all together on one of models to check the fit and the look.

This let me know that the clothes fitted well and they were right for the look of the piece I was doing. I didn't want any accessories with the look as it's meant to be more stripped back and as the makeup and hair is very heavy I didn't want too much distraction. Ideally I would like the feet to be bare in the photos but this is dependent on the weather on the day of the shoot.
