I did my Cinderella makeup first out of the 3 makeups, starting at 10am in the morning. I did most of the makeup then applied the eyelashes and mouth prosthetic at the end just before we went on location.
These were two of the further shots the photographer did of the model that include the entirety of the hairtsyle. I like the positioning of these images as they're quite simple but effect to show the mouth prosthetic.
These were the headshots I took of Cinderella including the ones in context of the shoot and ones from different angles to show off the makeup. I like the interest in the background of these photos and the sharp focus on the makeups compared to the back of the image. I especially like the photo with the model looking off to the left as it shows the eye makeup very well, especially the diamantes and think I will use this as one of the final images.
Overall I was happy with the Cinderella makeup and it came off as I wanted it to, especially the hair which was a big improvement on the first practice. I liked the eye makeup a lot and think the colours blended well into eachother, the green theme coming off well and although it was a very strong eyeshadow look it worked well for the editorial context of the piece. I also feel the diamantes added a nice touch to the eye makeup and again matched the colour scheme. Although the diamantes were slightly smaller than I first imagined I made up for this by the amount I put on and I like how the shape of them extended the eyeliner. They also blended well into the false eyelashes which had gems on the outer edges. I liked the overall effect of the mouth prosthetic however I was slightly disappointed with how it applied. Because of time constraints of having to collect the photographer and get to the set before the light faded too much I put the prosthetic on a rush and this compromised the neatness of putting it on. There are two big wrinkles in the piece (left and below) which I could have improved upon by stretching the piece tighter all the way around. However I was happy with the thickness of the cap plastic as the edge is barely detectable in the photographs. I liked the effect of adding the glitter to the makeup as it gave the makeup another dimension however I feel it was to neatly placed and feel it needs to be spread out around the edges more to fade into the skin better. Finally I liked the hair a lot better then when I first did it and feel it fits in with the context and the look of the other makeups a lot better. I was extremely happy with the colour of the chignon as it matched the models hair very well so didn't look like a fake piece, the size of plait also worked well. The bottom of the hair was curled with heated rollers and during the time between i first did the makeup and the shoot the curls dropped slightly. This was something I would have liked to improve upon so the hair was slightly bigger with more volume and curl. I did like the small plait I put in the hair though as it tied all 3 hairstyles together and added another layer of interest. Overall I liked the look and think the small problems such as the wrinkle in the prosthetic can be edited slightly in photoshop to improve the piece.
Rapunzel
I did my Rapunzel makeup last out of the three looks and it was the look I was assessed on at 1:30. I applied it all at the same time as it was the final makeup then added the flowers into the fair from the forest on location
These are some of the further away body shots of the rapunzel look. The fallen tree was a location I had originally picked out in my location scout and (after checking it's safety) it worked perfectly more a more ethereal full body shot for this look.
These were the headshots that were taken of the look including ones in context that will be chosen from for a final image and ones from every angle to show the makeup and hair. I feel the ones at the beginning are slightly too dark and prefer the ones at the end as they show the makeup better.
Overall I was very happy with this look and it is my favourite out of the three looks I did. I'm happy with the makeup application and think the colous of the look tie in very well together and really add a strong theme to the makeup and hair. I liked my eyeliner work in the crease of the eyelid but think the neatness of the line could improve slightly as it's a very exact look. I really like how the colour on the outside of the face came out and although the purple hue is subtle it adds a nice dimension to the makeup that also darkens the whole makeup slightly keeping it more in line with Grimm's fairy tales. I also like the colour of the lipstick a lot but my models lips were quite thin and looking at the photos if I were to do this makeup again I may overdraw the lip line slightly to get larger and more defined looking lips. I was happy with how the tears went and glad I chose the middle sized prosthetic out of the three I sculpted, adding gold glitter onto the bottom of them helped make them look much more animated. This hairstyle was the thing I liked best when I first designed all my characters and it has turned out to be the part I like best from all the makeups. I think it's in-keeping with both the original tale of rapunzel and fashion/editorial trends and think my plait work is intricate and detailed. The added hair piece really helped to make the look stand out. The one bit I'd like to improve upon is the fullness in the right side of the backcombed bit is not enough and doesn't match the volume in the middle and other side. This is something I can fix in photoshop but I would have liked to add more backcombing in that area to make the back fuller and rounder.
Beauty
The beauty makeup was the second look I started at 11:30. I applied some of the makeup during the time then just before we went on location applied the eyelashes, lipstick and fake blood.
These were the head-shots for the beauty look including ones in context and ones showing different angles of the makeup. These are a lot less contrasted that the other head shots as they were taken in a lighter place therefore have a slightly less dark feeling to them.
These were the full body shots for Beauty that were taken very much in context of the story with her looking like she's walking through the forest following her husband whose been enchanted into a dove. Because of this context I like these photos a lot and think they add a lot of character to the look.
Overall I was happy with the makeup however there was one major design element I forgot which I'm very disappointed about. I left/lost the feathers I had bought for the hair before the assessment meaning I couldn't add them into the hairstyle to represent the fallen dove feathers the husband drops to let beauty follow him. This is something I'm upset about as I'd drawn them into my design as they were a feature of the story and it's not something I can correct in the edit. Although the makeup and hair still works well if I was to do this again I would definitely add the feathers and I think this would add a lot to the hair.
I liked the eye makeup a lot in this look and think it goes with the colour scheme well. Because of my models eye shape I included a heavy and intricate eye makeup with a double winged liner and glitter and I think this worked well in the context and with the look. I also like the feather eyelashes a lot as they are in the context of the story (especially as they ended up being the only feathers in the look) and make the eyes look very wide and open. I feel the lipstick line could have been slightly neater at the bottom but I liked the colour a lot and think it worked well for darkening the look. I was also happy with the blood work on the face however even though I saved adding the blood till just before we left for location, by the time we arrived it had worn off the neck. If I were to do this again knowing this I would add the blood on location. I was very happy with how the marteux looked in the hair as it blended extremely well with the natural hair meaning it looked like it was made of the real hair, however in some of the photos there is a slight gap showing between the hairline and marteux so it needed to be slightly tighter to the head to stay in place more. The actual hairstyle is something I was quite disappointed with as I curled the whole head with hot rods for the look then took them out and left it very curly and backcombed. By the time I had finished the third makeup the curls had dropped out a lot to leave a lot of straight piece of hair that was backcombed but not the curly 'csndyfloss' look I wanted. Next time, after knowing how much the models hair drops I would not take the hot rods out until just before we left for location so the curls stay much more intact as I feel this would have improved the look of the hairstyle a lot.
Group Shots
I wanted group shots to work as the cover page for the magazine spread the photos were shot in context for. We first tried this location for the group shot however this didn't work because of the lighting - it was too dark on everyone's faces so didn't show any of the makeups clearly enough.
This was the second location we tried and although it was too dark when we first tried it we then added location lighting and this improved the look a lot. We wanted the set to be quite dark to be in-keeping with the dark Grimm theme but the lighting meant the models were a lot brighter and could be seen a lot more clearly. We had the models holding onto tree to look like they were creeping out the forest and shot them from low down for a more upwards shot. All this added a more eerie feel to the photos which kept with the Grimms context. These group shots show how all three look tie together and the common themes I designed throughout them such as the plaits and messy hair. I am very happy with these shots and think they will work perfectly when edited into context.
